A new chapter
Charles Stanley, a financial planning firm, came to us in the middle of a major transformation. Their new CEO, Paul Abberley, had three core focus areas in mind, one of which was employee engagement.
The problem? They didn’t know where to start. They hadn’t measured anything previously, and were unsure how to improve. That’s where People Lab came in.
A strength-based approach for sustaining engagement
We know better than to make assumptions about what good looks like for people. So we started with a series of workshops to understand what the ‘best experience’ meant for Charles Stanley employees. These insights influenced a bespoke survey that in turn uncovered key areas for improvement. We focused in on these areas, using more detailed workshops to truly delve into the heart of Charles Stanley.
To make sure the changes were long-lasting, we ran sessions with managers, upskilling them and empowering them to sustain engagement in the future.
The project team then took our recommendations and started implementing eight work streams, including using employee champions to create a viral change approach.

Year-on-year improvements across every area
- 20 percentage point improvement in EEI scores
- 96% of survey items significantly improved
And there was a direct correlation between areas where scores improved and the work streams we recommended and helped implement. As well as all of the incredible employee feedback, Charles Stanley saw engagement improve and drive their return to profit.
