World wellbeing week: Why a great employee experience is essential for wellbeing

Wellbeing isn’t just a personal issue — it’s a workplace one. And increasingly, organisations are recognising that employee experience (EX) and employee engagement (EE) play a vital role in supporting how people feel, function, and flourish at work.

A strong employee experience helps create the conditions where wellbeing can thrive. When people feel connected to purpose, supported by their leaders, and empowered in their day-to-day work, wellbeing becomes the natural outcome — not an extra initiative bolted on the side.

This World Wellbeing Week, we’re asking: what if improving wellbeing at work started not with a new policy, but with rethinking the way people experience work itself?

What can we do differently?

Over on The EX Space, we explored why traditional wellbeing interventions often fall short — and why EX offers a more sustainable, systemic solution.

Here are three practical ways you can shift your focus and better support wellbeing through experience design:

1. Move beyond surface-level initiatives
A fruit basket and a mindfulness app might look good on paper, but they won’t address the root causes of burnout or stress. Look at the broader employee journey — from workload and ways of working to clarity, autonomy and psychological safety.

2. Make time to listen — and act
If you want to understand wellbeing at work, start by asking employees what helps and hinders it. Gather insight through listening sessions, pulse surveys or check-ins — then show people how their feedback is being used to shape change.

3. Reframe the role of leaders and managers
Managers are often the first line of support — or stress. Equip them with the tools, space and permission to lead with empathy, model healthy behaviours, and create team environments that support (rather than drain) energy and wellbeing.
