World Book Day 2018: Three simple ways to get involved at work

It’s World Book Day on Thursday 1st March 2018! We’ve put together a few ideas that you could bring to your workplace to celebrate this event. These ideas aren’t restricted to World Book Day – you can enjoy these book-themed initiatives all year round! Take a look at our ideas below to get started:

Organise a fundraising event

Booktrust is a charity which supports children and families to experience the joy of reading. Their research shows that reading can influence children from an early stage and can positively impact many aspects of their lives.

Inspired by World Book Day, you could get together with your colleagues to raise money for Booktrust (or another charity of your choice). They’ve shared a fundraising a-z to help you get started if you’re stuck for ideas – from bake-offs to sponsored bike rides, there’s an event to suit every organisation.

Start a book-swap

If you’ve got a few books lying around at home that you no longer want or need, bring them into your workplace to share with your colleagues. You could start a book-swap initiative (and ask others to participate with their unwanted books) or create a mini-library in an unused area of the office. It’s a great way to share your favourite reads with others – and find some new favourites of your own.

Recommend a book to a colleague (or ask for recommendations)

If you’ve just read a book that you think a colleague would enjoy, send them a link to it in an email – or better still, offer to lend them your copy. On World Book Day, you could ask a few colleagues for their recommendations and start to collate a personal reading list.

The Goodreads app enables users to build a digital bookcase – so you can keep track of what you’ve read, alongside what you want to read in the future. You’ll also get personalised recommendations based on your lists, and will be able to see what others are reading. It could be a useful tool for compiling all of those recommendations from your colleagues!

People Lab’s Recommended Reads

We’ve put together a guide to the books we love, which you can download here. Our work is grounded in positive psychology, so it’ll come as no surprise that many of our favourites are written by positive psychologists! Many are books we’ve read cover to cover (several times over), and authors include Shawn Achor, Dan Pink, Susan Cain and many more.
