The latest free tool from The EX Space will help you with the biggest single challenge in EE/EX right now…find out more

Our inaugural EX Report found that ‘building line manager capability’ was the biggest challenge for practitioners, as well as a key priority for many organisations. The evidence is clear, line managers can make or break your employee experience and impact employee engagement. But we know that it’s not easy managing people, and in fact it’s probably never been tougher.

We know that people are often promoted to line management roles based on their technical expertise, or subject matter competence, rather than their ability to lead others. It’s so often the case that organisations expect line managers to somehow just know what to do to when it comes to EX and engagement, but the view from EX and engagement practitioners is that we’ve got work to do to set our line managers up for success.

  • We need to help them understand our plans and the role they play in facilitating employee experience and engagement.
  • We need to work on building their skills and capability.
  • And we need to do this in a way that doesn’t add further stress and pain to their already busy workload.

Rather than telling them that this is yet another task on their to-do list, we must find ways to motivate and inspire them to want to improve EX, and then make it easy for them to do the right thing. So, we’re sharing a brilliant solution to this big challenge – exclusively for practitioner and professional members in The EX Space.

Introducing the Line Managers Team Experience (TX) Toolkit

The Line Managers Team Experience Toolkit is your ‘go-to‘ resource for enhancing employee engagement and experience within your teams. Designed for practical use, it offers easy-to-follow activities that empower line managers to elevate EX without overwhelming workloads.

What sets this toolkit apart is its simplicity and effectiveness. Tested across numerous organisations globally, it focuses on strengths rather than fixing what’s broken, fostering psychological safety within teams. Its success lies in its simplicity, ensuring it doesn’t burden managers but rather equips them to facilitate impactful discussions.

This toolkit offers a structured approach, ensuring managers lead by example. Before implementing it with their teams, we recommend managers go through the toolkit themselves, gaining a deeper understanding of their own experiences. This paves the way for confidence when using with their own teams later on.

It’s not about reinventing the wheel but rather understanding what constitutes a great experience for your team and building on those elements. This approach encourages proactive involvement from everyone, allowing individuals to contribute to their own experience improvements.

Flexible in its application, the toolkit can be adapted to various team sizes and work structures. Whether used in dedicated workshops, or brief team sessions (virtual or otherwise!), it accommodates diverse team schedules, ensuring accessibility and effectiveness.

We wanted simplicity, so the toolkit is completely user friendly with detailed guides for each step, offering flexibility in time management during sessions. So regardless of your line managers facilitation skills, they’ll have everything they need to deliver with confidence and impact.

This toolkit empowers line managers to lead engaging discussions, craft action plans, and drive positive change within their teams. It’s a comprehensive resource designed to enhance employee experience and engagement, placing managers at the forefront of creating a thriving workplace environment.

At People Lab, we’ve created numerous ‘bespoke’ versions of the Line Managers’ toolkit for some fantastic organisations, including Virgin Atlantic, Haribo, LNER and the Canal and River Trust (to name a few!) – with great results. Amongst these:

  • Reduction in call centre attrition from 41% to 22% in just one year, saving over £370,00
  • Increased cross-sales contribution of over £6 million
  • Reduction in absence saving over £150,000
  • Movement from -14 to +28 net promoter score in one year
  • An increase in engagement scores from 50% to 94% in 12 months
