Kicking off 2025 with energy: Key Insights from The EX Space’s first webinar of the year

We couldn’t have asked for a better way to launch The EX Space 2025 webinar programme than with Abi Humayun from People Activation, who shared compelling insights on ‘energy at work.’ Drawing from People Activation’s ATOM™ study, Abi explored two critical topics impacting workplaces today: the ‘energy crisis at work’ and the challenges of the ‘frozen middle.’

Abi highlighted the widespread energy crisis affecting employees across industries and territories. Many workers feel disconnected from their organization’s strategy and unsure how their efforts contribute to broader success. This lack of alignment drains energy and enthusiasm, making it harder for organizations to achieve their goals. Abi emphasised the importance of creating meaningful connections between employees and organisational purpose to reignite energy and engagement.

The energy crisis isn’t just about individual burnout—it’s systemic. Organizations need to shift from focusing solely on output to addressing the underlying factors that drain energy, such as unclear goals, lack of trust, and poor communication. By actively involving employees in shaping organizational priorities, leaders can foster a sense of ownership and purpose. Investing in initiatives like meaningful feedback loops, and transparent communication can help rebuild energy across teams.

The conversation also spotlighted the “frozen middle,” a term describing middle managers who often bear the brunt of organizational pressures. Tasked with delivering strategic messages from leadership and meeting the day-to-day needs of their teams, these managers face significant challenges without always having a voice in shaping the strategy. Abi urged organisations to empower and support middle managers, recognising their vital role in activating energy and driving change.

The frozen middle isn’t a new challenge, but what if we approached it differently? Rather than viewing middle managers as a bottleneck, organizations should see them as enablers. Empowering this group starts with giving them greater autonomy, opportunities to co-create strategies, and tools to effectively engage their teams. By shifting the focus to their well-being and development, organizations can turn middle managers into key advocates for change and energy renewal. We have a tried and tested ‘managers toolkit’ which provides managers with everything they need to not only thrive at work but enable their teams to thrive too. You can find out more about our line managers toolkit here.

These insights set a powerful tone for our 2025 discussions, reminding us that addressing the energy crisis and unlocking the potential of middle managers are crucial to building thriving workplaces.
