We were delighted to welcome a very special guest, Todd Kashdan to our first Reset Show of 2022. And what an amazing start it was.
Todd came on the show to talk about his new book, The Art of Insubordination, which is described as the essential guide for anyone seeking to be heard, make change, and rebel against an unhealthy status quo. We had a fascinating discussion with Todd which ranged from bringing up kids who are principled rebels, through to the band Fugazi -it was a seriously strong start to our Reset Show programme for the year and really worth a listen.
Something that particularly resonated with me was when Todd talked about the things we do to be liked. As a lifelong people pleaser, I could really relate to this and welcome practical ideas on how to overcome it. Interestingly, in the book, Todd talks about the way insubordination can help to neutralise cognitive bias.
I also love that Todd includes a ‘rebel archetype quiz’ to go alongside the book. This involves 15 questions to better understand what untapped potential exists within you to improve the welfare of yourself, and other people in society. I found out that I have a tendency to be the ‘Innovator’. This archetype is about breaking the mould in pursuit of innovation. The other archetypes are ’Defenders’, ‘Culture Shifters’ and ‘Niche Carvers’. What I also love is that when you do the quiz Todd shares some examples of other people who are the same rebel archetype as you. Famous ‘Innovators’ include Maria Montessori, the Wright Brothers, and Marie Curie -I’ll take that! Famous ‘Culture Shifters’ include Eleanor Roosevelt and Simone de Beauvoir. Famous ‘Defenders’ include Nelson Mandela, Malcolm X, and Winston Churchill. And famous ‘Niche Carvers’ include people such as Jane Goodall, Edmund Hillary, and Bob Marley. The Art of Insubordination is absolutely a five star read and one of the best books I’ve read in a very long time. If you’re interested in making a positive difference at work, outside of work, in life or anywhere really, then this book is for you. Many of us want to shake things up in the name of positive progress, but don’t know where to start. What I particularly love about the book is the way Todd shares practical advice to help you become a principled rebel. But as you’d expect, all the guidance is backed up by a solid evidence base with numerous psychological studies and then brought to life with thought provoking and inspiring stories and examples. Todd seamlessly bridges the gap between academia and real life, and in doing so, this book really is a force for good. Buy the book, listen to The Reset Show and become a principled rebel today.
