We recently published our 2024 employee experience and employee engagement benchmarking report. And I’ve got to be honest, it made for pretty depressing reading. The headline? We’ve made next to no progress on improving people’s lives at work over the last 20 years or so. At least this is what the global employee engagement index figures are telling us.
This has promoted debate about the discipline and profession of employee engagement, with some commentators asking if it is still relevant, and if EX should replace employee engagement. Unsurprisingly, our answer to this latter question is no! Quite simply if we get the experience right, employees are more likely to be engaged. And if the experience is poor, then guess what, less likelihood of engagement.
Companies leading the way when it comes to EX know that great experiences lead to higher engagement and all of the business benefits this brings. So whichever benchmarks you choose to look at the story is the same – we have work to do!
Organisations excelling in this space know that we need to understand how employees experience the organisation if we are to unlock employee engagement and all of the benefits this brings. We need to consider both employee experience and employee engagement if we are to develop workplaces that people want to join and contribute their best to. If we design and improve EX we’ll contribute towards developing an engaged workforce, which ultimately benefits not only employees, but customers and partners too. We need to think about both, we need to focus on both.
It’s vital we don’t become seduced by shiny, sexy EX apps that promise the world – we have to remember our why; that ultimately we want to engage our people.
