An EX mindset underpins an approach that is genuinely human centred, which views employees as customers. Having an EX mindset changes the dialogue from processes or programmes, and people as resources, to individual needs and intentionally designed experiences.
An EX mindset is one of the core elements that enables the delivery of an effective employee experience. Download our EX Maturity Measure to help you to understand how mature your EX mindset is today.
You’re more likely to be operating at the ‘forming’ end of maturity if your EX Mindset is from a more traditional HR approach, and the language of EX is limited to a few early pioneers. For example you prioritise…
- Processes and programmes first, people second
- What we do to employees
- People as resources
You’re more likely to be operating at the ‘performing’ end of maturity if your EX Mindset is about the products you deliver. For example you prioritise…
- Emotions – they are the material you work on
- Employee journeys
- Moments that matter – significant points in a journey that have a disproportionate impact on EX, either positive or negative
You’re more likely to be operating at the ‘transforming’ end of maturity if your EX Mindset is focussed on experience and views employees as customers.
For example you prioritise…
- People and their unique needs and motivations
- The richness of the experiences you create for different people
- EX outcomes, not just the tactics you use to achieve them
To develop your EX mindset think about:
- Changing the language – ditch dehumanising language such as resources, staff etc, and instead talk about people.
- Experimenting with new tools to help you better understand your people’s lived experience – journey mapping is a great place to start.
- Creating and using employee personas , but make sure they are behavioural, rather than role-based to really explore employee needs and motivations.
And on this last point if you’re interested in developing behavioural employee personas join us at the next EX Space webinar where we’ll explore
- What personas are and why they matter
- Where to get started when developing your employee personas
- How to use personas to design experiences
- How to avoid the persona graveyard
- Some real life examples of employee personas and how they have been used
This is going to be a popular webinar so sign up today to register your place. We’ll look forward to seeing you there!
