If you’ve been following People Lab for a while, you’ll probably know that Autism Awareness Month in April is something very close to my heart. My son Harry is autistic, and my husband Ted is autistic with ADHD, which has inspired some of our most personal and impactful content.
Back in 2019, I first interviewed Harry and Ted about their experiences with autism, and it sparked an incredible response. You can still read that original interview here. Later, we hosted a webinar featuring them, and it quickly became one of our most-watched sessions ever! Clearly, their stories resonated deeply, and I’m grateful for every conversation it opened up.
This April, I want to share a positive update, about Harry’s journey since those early conversations when he shared openly about the challenges he faced at school.
Fast-forward a few years, and Harry is now about to complete his BSc in Palaeontology at the University of Birmingham, a passion he’s had since childhood. He has truly found his tribe, is thriving in an environment where he can authentically be himself, and has learned to access the support he needs. Watching him pursue his dreams has been nothing short of inspiring.
Currently, Harry works part time at the Lapworth Museum of Geology and has had some incredible adventures, participating in digs across Utah, Northern Ireland, and Wales. Most excitingly, he recently joined the team on Britain’s Dinosaur Highway dig, which for someone as dinosaur obsessed as he was a dream come true (more on that here).
As parents, we often focus on the challenges our children face, and let’s be honest, there will always be challenges. Life for someone with autism isn’t straightforward, but it’s so important to also celebrate the amazing successes and the resilience they’ve developed.
In September, Harry will embark on his Master’s degree in Palaeontology, and I genuinely couldn’t be prouder. Watching him navigate university life, living independently, and building his confidence has been a joy to witness. It’s proof that with the right support and an inclusive environment, autistic individuals can truly thrive and achieve remarkable things.
I share Harry’s story today not just as a proud parent, but to remind us all that awareness, acceptance, and kindness are powerful forces. Let’s continue to champion these values, not only in April but every single day. And if you are interested in dino related content you can follow Haz on Instagram @pendraig_milnerae and check out some of his mind-blowing paleo-art!
