Internal comms (IC) expertise isn’t always taken seriously.
Working in IC we’re often called in late to the party. Expected to deliver messages that weren’t co-created, just approved. And of course everyone has an opinion on what will work best.
But here’s the truth: In IC we’re not just a messengers – we’re the architects of employee experience.
And in an AI-driven world where speed, complexity and noise are only increasing, that mindset shift isn’t just helpful — it’s essential.
Why the old model doesn’t work anymore
Traditional comms models were built for a different time – slower change cycles, more control, less complexity.
Now?
- Employees are overwhelmed.
- Trust in leadership is fragile.
- AI is flooding inboxes.
- And the comms team is still being asked to “push another update.”
It’s not working.
Because comms isn’t content anymore — it’s an experience.
And we’re the people who can design it.
What experience design really looks like
Designing comms like an experience means starting with:
- Empathy, not assumption — what’s the communication experience like today for our people?
- Mapping the communication journey, not just the reality of today but the ideal future experience too.
- Designing for meaning and emotion, not just clarity.
- Using AI wisely, to free up time for human nuance – not replace it.
And crucially, it means inviting employees into the communication design, not just broadcasting at them.
This is the shift People-First IC is leading
People-First Internal Communication (PFIC) is a growing movement that says: We don’t need better messages. We need better moments.
We believe IC pros deserve tools, credibility and community to help them lead this shift, not just survive it.
That’s what we’re building. A mindset. A methodology. And a movement.
Want to be part of it?
Curious about PFIC?
We’re building a global community of comms pros who want to do things differently. And di we mention a book coming soon!!
No fluff. No jargon. Just practical tools, fresh ideas, and people like you.
