Want to measure Employee Experience? Introducing our all new EX Lens Diagnostic

I guess it was only a matter of time… In the last few weeks I’ve been seeing and hearing rumblings about ‘Employee Engagement Indexes’… Some consultancy firms are starting to argue that their model of EX is the ‘right’ model and is the best way for organisations to measure and benchmark their EX. And the idea of coming up with an ‘EX Index’, that is a single number or percentage which succinctly sums up your EX performance is, in my opinion, totally flawed. How can out whole experience at work, or with an organisation be distilled into a single number?  EX is too subjective, and without a reliable and valid psychometric to measure it, we’re a long way from an EX index, if indeed we even want to need one…

So what is the answer? Clearly we need to understand the experience our people are having, and we want to benchmark and monitor our progress. This is where our EX Lens tool can help.  It was developed using qualitative data gathered from thousands of ‘Best Experience’ stories. These stories enabled deep understanding of what truly matters at work. Categories of similar meanings were distilled from the data, and used to inform what exceptional employee experience is, and the conditions that make it possible. The EX Lens provides an overview of the insights, which we call the x9 ‘universal themes’

The EX Lens

But…

What differentiates this model from all others out there is that it acknowledges that the ‘universal themes’ are only ever part of the story. Understanding and working on them will get you some of the way to improving your EX, but the real magic happens when you combine them with what we call the ‘individual differences’. That is taking the time to explore and understand what a great experience looks like and feels like for the people in your organisation. And adding these insights into the mix.

We have now developed a tool of x36 questions for members of The EX Space. This will enable you to measure your EX performance against each of the universal themes. The measures included are taken from a range of reliable and valid psychometric scales, which are already in use and established. But remember you need to understand your ‘individual differences’ too. We highly recommend running some ‘Best EX’ conversations to understand what a great experience looks like for your people.

The insights gathered will enable you to iterate the diagnostic tool to make it more meaningful to your organisation and people. You can use the insights to develop further questions to add to the set included here. This will ensure you are measuring your performance and monitoring your progress against the elements of EX that really matter and make a difference to your people.
