How many times have you heard people in your organisation moaning & groaning about work? Is it a regular occurrence?
We’ve all worked in places where people are comfortable vocalizing their distaste for the workplace. Think about it – how many times have you heard the following?
“The weekends just don’t seem long enough”
“Ugh, it’s horrible coming back from a holiday to this”
“God, I haven’t stopped all day”
These kinds of statements are delivered with a groan, grumble or sigh; weary expressions of coworkers & colleagues who seemingly would much rather be somewhere else. But how much of this is genuine disengagement – and how much of it comes down to learned behaviour?
Are we conditioned to dislike work? We’re raised to believe work is a boring, time consuming slog. Parents that can’t wait to retire, friends who constantly rant & rave about horrible bosses. We’re told from day one that work isn’t much fun – and so being happy at work seems entirely unnatural. Admitting that you love going to work is often met with expressions of shock & disbelief – are you completely deluded, or just so utterly boring that your crappy job is the best thing in your life?
At People Lab, we want to turn this perception on its head. Why spend so much of your day feeling negative, tired and overwhelmed by the task at hand, when you could focus on the positive aspects of the work you do and really learn to love it? Wouldn’t you love to return home energized and inspired by what you do?
