As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, it’s increasingly clear that its integration into the workplace, is not just inevitable but also transformational. The ability of AI to enhance, streamline, and innovate HR and other people processes presents both exciting opportunities and challenges. In our latest webinar, we explored the multifaceted impact of AI on HR, delving into how it is reshaping the workforce, improving efficiencies, and fostering a new era of personalized employee experiences.
Understanding AI in HR
AI, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary, involves the development of computer systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation. Within HR, AI’s role is expanding from recruitment and performance management to employee engagement and beyond. The key takeaway is that AI is not here to replace HR professionals but to empower them, allowing them to focus more on strategic and human-centric aspects of their roles.
AI in Action: Transforming People Functions
We’ve been using AI in the people side of organisations for some time now, here are a few real-world examples to illustrate:
- Recruitment: Tools like HireVue and Pymetrics are revolutionizing the recruitment process. These AI-driven platforms screen CVs, conduct initial interviews, and match candidates with job roles based on their skills and experiences. This not only speeds up the hiring process but also reduces biases, ensuring a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
- Employee Engagement: Platforms like Peakon and CultureAmp use AI to analyze employee feedback and engagement surveys. They provide insights and recommendations for improving workplace culture, helping address issues proactively and foster a more engaged and satisfied workforce.
- Performance Management: AI-driven tools like Betterworks and Workday are enabling more dynamic performance management. These systems track employee performance, set personalized goals, and provide real-time feedback, thereby enhancing productivity and supporting continuous employee development.
The Big Shift: From Professional-Grade to Consumer-Grade AI
While we’ve been using various AI applications for a number of years, we’re now in the midst of a significant shift from ‘professional-grade’ to ‘consumer-grade’ technologies. This shift suggests that AI tools are becoming more accessible and user-friendly, similar to personal assistants like Siri or Alexa that many of us use daily. In the workplace, this could mean that every employee might soon have their own AI assistant, helping with everyday tasks such as scheduling, finding information quickly and easily and even complex decision-making.
Generative AI: The Next Frontier
Generative AI, a type of AI that can create new content based on existing data, is poised to transform how we work. By 2030, it’s estimated that up to 70% of today’s work activities could be automated. This will require a significant shift in how organizations manage talent, requiring reskilling and redeployment of employees. HR will play a critical role in navigating this transition, ensuring that employees are supported and prepared for these changes.
MS Viva is the clear front runner when it comes to providing an end to end employee experience solution, that works for both subject matter experts, leaders, managers and all employees given it has Copilot (MS generative AI) integrated throughout all of the tools and apps on offer – more on this topic coming very soon!!
Ethical Considerations and Challenges
While AI offers numerous benefits, it also brings ethical concerns, particularly around bias, privacy, and job displacement. It’s crucial for organizations to implement AI responsibly, ensuring transparency, fairness, and accountability. HR professionals must lead the charge in addressing these ethical challenges, fostering a workplace environment that is both technologically advanced and ethically sound.
The Future of HR in an AI-Driven World
The integration of AI in HR is not just about adopting new tools but about fundamentally rethinking how we manage and support the workforce. Our new org structures will surely feature AI as the first non-human intelligence contributing to our mission and goals.
There’s no doubt that AI is has the potential to elevate HR and transform the future of work. However, it is essential we approach this transformation with careful consideration, focusing on ethical considerations and a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation. The future of HR in an AI-driven world is bright but will need both a proactive and strategic approach to harness its full potential.
