Sport Relief 2018: Three simple ways to get your workplace involved

From 17th – 23rd March, it’s Sport Relief! This national event aims to raise money for a variety of causes, tackling critical issues affecting people throughout the UK and across the globe.

Since last year, the money raised has achieved incredible results. More than 50,000 people in the UK living with a mental health problem have been helped, over 900,000 people across Africa have been treated with anti-malarial medication, and over 3.4 million people in Africa have received help with maternal, neonatal and child health funding.

If you’re struggling for ideas on how you and your colleagues can get involved, don’t worry! We’ve put together three simple ideas that you could use to bring your workplace together and start fundraising for these causes. Take a look at our list below:

Step it up

As part of this year’s campaign, Sport Relief has set a unique challenge – asking Brits to collectively walk a billion steps a day, every day! The charity has created an app for tracking steps, which you can download via the App Store or Google Play. When using the app, you’ll be able to set your own steps target, view the nation’s step results, and create a giving page to collect sponsorship money.

One of the simplest ways to increase your daily steps is walking to work, if that’s possible. For some of us, it just means ditching a bus or train journey and leaving a little earlier in the morning. However, if walking to work isn’t an option, you could aim to walk more when you’re at work. For example, you could try…

  • Instead of sending emails or making phone calls to other departments, visit them on foot
  • Take a walk in your lunch break, instead of staying at your desk or in the lunch area
  • Use the stairs instead of the lift

You can also use the Sport Relief app to set up leagues, allowing you to compete with others and add some friendly competition to the challenge! Why not set up a walking league at work between colleagues or departments? It could boost your fundraising and encourage others in your organisation to take part.

Organise a fundraising event

There are many ways you could bring your colleagues together to raise money for this fantastic charity, in ways that will suit everyone.

If you don’t fancy an office sports day or sponsored run (remember that these events might not be suitable for or appeal to everyone), Sport Relief provides a range of ideas and tools to help you get started in their fundraising pack (download it here).

One of the ideas listed is an office quiz, which could be a simple and fun way to get everyone involved in your organisation. You could organise this during a lunch hour– and give items from the Sport Relief shop as prizes!

Social media takeover

If you’ve got a large social media following, you could organise a one-day social media takeover for Sport Relief. Instead of posting about your organisation, take the opportunity to raise awareness for the charity instead. In doing this, you could influence others and encourage them to get involved – helping to raise even more money for this amazing cause.

If you’re not sure what to post about, there are a number of stories you could share from people who have been helped directly. You could also share the charity’s videos and social media posts, and retweet or share posts from others who are doing great things for Sport Relief.

How will your workplace get involved and raise money for Sport Relief? We’d love to hear all about it! Let’s keep the conversation going on Twitter, Facebook or in the comments section below.
