Many people find the idea of putting together an employee engagement survey a daunting prospect. But it needn’t be – in fact, your employee engagement survey should work for you, and not the other way around.
When you’re tasked with putting an engagement survey together, it can seem like a hugely overwhelming job. How should I promote it internally? How will I convince people to open it, let alone complete it? And what will I do with the information the survey presents?
Too many people make the mistake of trying to juggle too many balls at once when it comes to employee engagement. Trying to run a successful survey whilst continuing with your daily tasks is a battle in itself, but what happens when it comes to analysing the information from the survey? How will you keep the process alive after the survey, and organise engagement activities on top of everything else?
Many organisations across the globe recognise that employee engagement is a full time, ongoing and permanent job. Roles such as ‘Head of Engagement’ and ‘Employee Engagement Manager’ have been popping up in companies over the last few years, as business owners realise that the benefits of investing belief, time and money in employee engagement activities are not to be sniffed at. The business case for engagement is pretty straightforward, as there’s plenty of evidence proving that it has a direct impact on the bottom line.
But challenges to this evidence continue to cause stumbling blocks for improving engagement in many companies. While some MDs might begin to accept that engagement is worthwhile, they might not always have complete comittment (or budget) to create a new role that’s specifically engagement orientated. In these situations, internal comms, HR and marketing teams are often tasked with implementing engagement activities and plans.
If this is the case in your organisation and you’ve been tasked with this role, you’re probably excited at the prospect of sinking your teeth into your new goal. But I’ll hazard a guess that you’re also feeling overwhelmed by the long and unexplored road ahead of you.
